What makes a community builder? Wisdom Sharing with Dina Ghandour

Sep 30 / The Portal team
Today in our What Makes a Community Builder? series we are honoured to have Dina, the creator of Unbecoming, share their story. At The Portal, these interviews are part of our wider exploration of wisdom sharing, specifically how knowledge and collective support can reshape the way communities thrive.

Before joining The Portal, most of Dina’s work for the past 10 years has been offline (except for social media). She describes The Portal as “a soft landing into the online world of offerings and I'm grateful to have had the chance to create a mini membership there and open up my work to people from all over the world.”

Dina says “Unbecoming is a no-frills online container where women can gather to unlearn (rigid, capitalistic, patriarchal conditioning on our life and menstrual cycles) and connect with one another. We do this through open-hearted discussions, movement sessions and special-guest workshops. We meet twice a month only, so it's low-pressure and spacious.”

Dina’s approach reflects the values of wisdom sharing,  a slower, more intentional way of gathering that allows learning and unlearning to happen collectively rather than competitively.

Why did you choose to create this offer on The Portal?

“The Portal feels like an easy, cosy, no-frills place to launch an offering that also feels cosy and no-frills in its essence... There's also a big dedication to community, and that feels really important for any work we want to do in learning, unlearning, decolonisation and embracing our cycles. And it's staunchly pro-Palestinian!”

For Dina, the alignment between Unbecoming and The Portal is also about interactive learning, not just teaching through content, but creating genuine exchange where participants feel part of the process.

As this series is about “What makes a community builder?” Why does community building matter to you right now?

“Having been a yoga teacher for almost a decade, I built and nurtured what I thought was a rooted community. The genocide in Palestine and the apathy and silence from many wellness leaders and practitioners both at home and abroad made me completely rethink what community means and what values it should hold… Building community now feels different, and needs a different approach. I don't have all the answers, and I also don't want to be the only one to find them. So I'm in a much more collaborative space, allowing the community members to also take charge and feel empowered to build something WITH me, and alongside me. The top down approach is no longer working or sustainable, we have to do it together.”

This collaborative, non-hierarchical spirit mirrors the idea of “wisdom sharing” with each member offering a piece of the collective tapestry.

What does community mean to you?

“Community for me means:

  • coming together intentionally for a common purpose or cause
  • a space of deep listening with compassion
  • holding each other in high regard
  • opening your heart to understanding the experience of another
  • being available and vulnerable to both support and share as needed
  • being in reciprocity and holding benevolence for one another
  • a deep sense of knowing that human connection is our lifeblood as a collective, and because of that there's a dedication to continue nurturing it and stoking the community fire”

Where else have you tried to build community before joining The Portal?

“Mostly just in person through yoga classes, retreats, community events, potlucks and similar.”

These in-person experiences showed Dina the importance of connection. Inside The Portal, this takes shape through interactive learning and “wisdom sharing” practices that bring people together in new, regenerative ways.
